Overview of the educational system
The Ivorian education system is structured in 3 cycles: the primary cycle, the secondary cycle, and the higher cycle. But education is compulsory from the age of 06 (Grade 1) to the age of 16 (grade 10). The education system runs all the way from grade 0 known as infant school with increasingly being promoted by the authorities and education partners, to grade 13.
Education policy in Côte d'Ivoire is conducted through different ministries. Each level of education corresponds to an autonomous ministry. Higher education is managed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, primary and secondary education is the responsibility of the Ministry of National Education with is also responsible for the technical and vocational training, although some vocational training courses are managed by various other technical ministries (Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of the Civil Service, Ministry of Water and Forests, etc.)
The primary cycle includes six levels (preparatory course 1st and 2nd year, 1st year basic course, elementary course 2nd year, 1st year through courses, 2nd year average); it is sanctioned by the Certificate of Elementary Primary Studies and a competitive entrance examination for the 6th year of high schools and colleges at a national level.
As regards secondary education, which is subdivided into two cycles, it includes four classes for the first cycle and three for the second. Secondary studies are sanctioned for the first cycle by the “Brevet d'Études” du premier cycle (BEPC) and for the second by the baccalaureate.
Since 1960, the Ivorian state has created several secondary and higher technical education establishments, to provide training for specialized executives and to promote professional sectors through the privatization of this area as well. To date, there are several private and public secondary and higher technical education establishments on Ivorian territory.
