"Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want" is the African Union’s long-term strategic framework for transforming the continent over a 50-year period. Adopted in 2015, the document articulates a collective vision of “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.” Rooted in Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance, Agenda 2063 builds on past continental initiatives while responding to emerging global, social, economic, and technological trends.
The framework is structured around seven core aspirations: inclusive and sustainable economic growth; political unity and continental integration; good governance, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law; peace, security, and stability; a strong cultural identity and shared values; people-driven development with a particular focus on women, youth, and children; and Africa’s role as a strong, united, and influential global partner. The document emphasizes structural economic transformation, human capital development, science and innovation, modern infrastructure, climate resilience, and sustainable management of natural resources.
Agenda 2063 also serves as a call to action, outlining priority areas, implementation mechanisms, and critical enablers such as accountable leadership, domestic resource mobilization, capable institutions, and citizen ownership. Overall, it provides a unifying roadmap to guide national, regional, and continental policies toward achieving Africa’s long-term development aspirations.
