This paper captures the outcomes of the discussions at the ADEA 2017 Triennale’s fourth sub-theme on building peace and global citizenship through education in Africa.

The paper highlights the importance of inclusive dialogue and actionable strategies in promoting peace and Global Citizenship Education (GCED). It calls for systemic interventions in Africa's educational systems that are sensitive to diverse cultural and economic contexts, and a shift towards competency-based approaches that prioritize skills, values, and attitudes that promote peacebuilding. It also emphasizes the importance of inter-faith religious education in promoting mutual understanding and combating extremist ideologies.

The paper acknowledges the need for partnerships and collaborations in promoting peace education and advancing GCED in Africa, the importance of Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the use of technology for peacebuilding while limiting its potential to incite violence, and advocates for education policies that empower women and encourage equal participation in conflict prevention and resolution processes.

The paper concludes by urging governments to establish comprehensive frameworks for advancing peace and GCED in Africa. Such frameworks should promote, among others, the adoption of conflict-sensitive education planning and programming, institutionalization of disaster risk reduction interventions, and harnessing of indigenous approaches to conflict management and integrating into curricula.
