Abstract

The KIX Observatory explores the responses of 40 African partner countries of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to the impact of COVID-19 on the well-being of schoolchildren in sub-Saharan Africa. The interventions are analyzed across four key areas: health and nutrition, protection against sexual violence and early pregnancy, support for displaced populations, and challenges encountered. Initiatives include the distribution of school meals, menstrual hygiene products, and psychosocial support for vulnerable children.

Challenges include a lack of resources, misinformation, and disruption of support services. Research findings indicate an increase in sexual violence and early pregnancy, underscoring the need for stronger measures to protect schoolchildren.

Recommendations include strengthening violence monitoring systems, facilitating the readmission of pregnant adolescents, improving community capacity for mental health, and enhancing international coordination to counter misinformation.

In summary, the document highlights the importance of a coordinated response to improve the well-being of children, particularly the most vulnerable, during and after the pandemic.
