This document examines school reopenings in 40 African partner countries of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the major challenges and key strategies adopted to ensure a safe and inclusive reopening of education systems.

Countries have developed consultative decision-making frameworks and campaigns to encourage the return of students to school, particularly those from vulnerable groups such as girls and displaced children. Strict health protocols have been put in place to ensure the safety of the school community, despite infrastructure and funding challenges. Accelerated learning programs and the adaptation of teaching methods have been essential to fill the learning gaps caused by prolonged closures.

The document also highlights the need to support low-cost private schools and teachers, while recommending future measures to strengthen the resilience of the education systems in the face of future disruptions. These efforts aim to ensure quality and inclusive education, in response to the lasting impacts of the pandemic on education in Africa.
