Abstract

The Botswana ICT4E Country Profile offers a comprehensive analysis of the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Botswana’s education sector, with a focus on the challenges and progress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guided by the Maitlamo National ICT Policy (2007), Botswana equipped all secondary schools with computer infrastructure and internet connectivity. Despite these early efforts, the pandemic highlighted significant gaps in digital readiness and access, particularly in remote areas where limited internet connectivity and electricity hindered remote learning.

The report underscores the need for comprehensive digital literacy programs and enhanced ICT infrastructure. The National Broadband Strategy aims to improve internet connectivity and access to schools, libraries, and community centers, promoting digital inclusion. However, high data costs and limited fiber deployment pose ongoing challenges.

To bridge the digital divide, the report recommends establishing a multi-stakeholder committee, investing in infrastructure across all education levels, unifying educator training programs, and improving connectivity and digital literacy nationwide. These actions are vital for Botswana's goal of becoming a knowledge-based society by 2036.

While Botswana has made notable strides in ICT integration in education, addressing these critical areas is essential to ensure equitable and quality education for all learners in the digital age.
